Mattlin Patterson says 25-30% chance of financial depression on horizon

2008.09.17

Move over recession, make room for full blown depression. According to Reuters, the chairman of Mattlin Patterson, an private equity firm, said that he believes financial turbulence may lead to full blown depression. Patterson is quoted as saying “If you don’t accept that there is at least a 20 to 25 percent chance of a financial markets-led depression you’re fooling yourself.” I guess it is time to start buying gold or art, because if there is a depression, that money under the mattress is going to be as worthless as your bond certificates and trade receipts.

Don’t text and drive (trains)

2008.09.15

If you have been all wrapped up in the coverage of Hurricane Ike and the Economic NWO that is currently unfolding, you may not have heard much follow-up regarding the train collision in California. As it turns out, the engineer may have missed the stop signal because he was distracted by a text message conversation. According to a NY Times article, ”investigators plan to subpoena the cellphone records of the engineer, identified by railroad union officials as Robert Sanchez, as well as those of the two boys who were said to have been exchanging text messages Friday in the minutes before his commuter train smashed into the freight train. The young men told KCBS-TV that they had taken part in the text messages exchange with the engineer right before the crash.” So, let me get this straight. Some states have passed statutes against driving while text messaging, but there is no policy at Amtrak (or state/Federal statutes) prohibiting train engineers, who have thousands of lives in their hands, from doing the same? Sounds awesome.

American Airlines shines again!

2008.09.09

American Airlines is ever expanding its resume, which includes earning record-breaking fines from the FAA, and serious computer glitches. The latest and greatest achievement of this fine establishment is losing a corpse for 4 days. American Airlines was entrusted by Miguel Olaya to ship the remains of his deceased wife to Ecuador for funeral services.  When Mr. Olaya arrived in Ecuador, he was informed by the carrier, that they were not able to locate his wife’s remains. What’s worse, is that 4 days later when the corpse was recovered, it was badly decomposed, because it had not been properly refrigerated. It was discovered the someone at AA had typed the wrong airport code when processing the body, resulting in the body being shipped to Guatemala, instead of Ecuador. Keep up the good work, American!
